Dr Bhavin Patel 

Dr Bhavin Patel is a glaucoma specialist at King’s Health Partners and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS
Foundation Trust. He is a Senior Glaucoma Research Fellow at the KCL Frost Eye Research Department
and an MD candidate at King’s College London, where his research focuses on the aqueous dynamics of
trabecular meshwork surgery and the underlying mechanisms of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery
(MIGS).

His work aims to improve understanding of why glaucoma interventions succeed or fail, with a
particular emphasis on developing advanced imaging techniques to enable more precise and
personalised surgical approaches. He is also a King’s Health Partners MedTech Innovation and Surgical
Leadership Fellow and an Honorary Lecturer within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging
Sciences, working at the intersection of ophthalmic surgery, physiological measurement and
translational imaging.

As principal investigator of a Glaucoma UK-funded programme and recipient of the 2025 UKEGS–
Glaucoma UK Research Grant, Dr Patel collaborates with PURL to develop and validate photoacoustic
and ultrasound-based imaging methods to visualise Schlemm’s canal and the distal outflow pathways,
alongside broader photoacoustic sensing and tracking technologies for precision, image-guided
glaucoma surgery. His wider research includes prospective studies of aqueous dynamics across laser
and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures. He has presented internationally at ARVO, the European
Glaucoma Society, UKEGS and DOG, and serves as an examiner for the Royal College of
Ophthalmologists.
