The Photons+ Ultrasound Research Laboratory (PURL) at King’s College London was honoured to host a distinguished delegation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), led by Professor Kui-Ling Ding, President of SJTU and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the visit, Professor Ding and accompanying delegates were welcomed by members of the PURL team and given a comprehensive tour of the laboratory’s facilities. The delegation was introduced to PURL’s ongoing research in advanced biomedical imaging, with a particular focus on photoacoustics and ultrasound imaging and sensing technologies and their translational potential in surgical and interventional applications.

The visit included in-depth technical discussions and live demonstrations of experimental platforms developed within the lab. Researchers presented current work on optical-ultrasound hybrid imaging systems, highlighting innovations in high-resolution, label-free imaging and intraoperative sensing. These discussions provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on emerging trends in biomedical engineering, as well as future directions in interdisciplinary research bridging optics, acoustics, and clinical needs.

Professor Ding expressed strong interest in the translational impact of PURL’s work, particularly its relevance to real-time surgical guidance and pathological assessment. Both sides engaged in constructive dialogue on potential areas for future collaboration, including joint research initiatives, academic exchange, and opportunities for student training.

The visit concluded with a group discussion reflecting on the importance of international partnerships in advancing cutting-edge medical technologies. PURL looks forward to strengthening its relationship with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and exploring avenues for continued collaboration.
